A determined crime writer. A jaded police detective. When their paths collide on the darkened streets of the City of Angels, there is instant chemistry between them. But will it be enough to get them through one of the toughest cases of their careers? Find out in Lelie A. Kelly’s Nowhere to Hide.

Leslie A. Kelly's NOWHERE TO HIDE

In this second novel in the Hollywood Heat series, Evie Fleming has just arrived in Los Angeles to work on her next true crime book. Her parents aren’t exactly thrilled that she left behind a relatively safe job as a beat reporter in a small town to immerse herself in the violent world of criminal activity, so they definitely can’t find out that she was accosted just outside a dark parking garage on her first day in town.

Thanks to off-duty Detective Rowan Winchester, however, Evie was attacked but unharmed, even if she is shaken up by the incident. When the hunky cop sweeps in to save the day, she is overcome with both gratitude and attraction. Just staring at his rugged good looks and strong, powerful physique is enough to make her swoon… and he’s her savior as well!

Unfortunately, Evie’s chosen career path doesn’t exactly thrill Rowan, but that’s largely due to the fact that he’s tried so hard to bury his family’s dark legacy. So when he discovers that her next project involves chasing a killer and digging into the crimes that devastated those closest to him, he finds himself torn between helping her solve the case and trying to ignore his interest in her. Yet when the killer targets Evie, his protective instincts kick in one more time. But will they be strong enough to keep them both alive?

From the opening scene, Kelly plunges us into action and nail-biting suspense. Although she keeps the story dark and dangerous throughout the novel, she has a real talent for writing scenes that alternately raise the temperature and make us laugh. She has a flair for writing one liners that make us chuckle, such as when Rowan sweeps in to save the day at the very beginning of the story and Evie’s first thought was that Batman is real. These little asides are cute and plausible and totally suit Evie as a character, and it made me want to read more.

Kelly also has a knack for writing vivid descriptions about both her characters and places. From the moment Evie first drinks in Rowan’s looks, there is no doubt in our minds that he’s the hottest guy on the force. But I particularly love how she immerses us in places we’d rather avoid. She crafts a scene the way a set designer does for a slasher flick, with light and shadow and lots of isolated, creepy details that make us want to bolt and scream, “Don’t go in there!” It ratchets up the tension big time, and I really loved this element because it made me realize just how vested I was in the story.

If you’ve never encountered Kelly’s work before, this story should definitely appeal to readers who adore stories by Sandra Brown, Iris Johansen, and Catherine Coulter. Like those novelists, Kelly isn’t afraid to go full dark, but she keeps the story light enough with dashes of humor and lots of sizzling chemistry to keep us from throwing the book across the room in fright. If you love romantic suspense, Nowhere to Hide will be right up your alley. Although, you might need a flashlight. You definitely don’t want to be caught in the dark alone with this one!

This book was previously published in 2018 in e-book format as Wanting You.
