Happy National Milk Day! How will you celebrate? Hopefully you’ll pour a great big glass of milk and enjoy it with some yummy eats, such as our fudgy brownies or my favorite, Heather’s jumbo oatmeal-raisin cookies. But don’t forget the hardworking cows and farmers behind all that milk you enjoy on a daily basis. After all, you don’t want to be the one getting up at 4:30 a.m. every day to milk those doe-eyed moo cows, are you? So let’s give props where they are due. Thank a farmer today!

Although you’re probably too young to remember when milk first began to be delivered to back doors across America in sterilized glass bottles (that happened in 1878, so if you were alive then and are still kicking, good for you!), you may remember having milk delivered anyway. After all, some of Heather’s fondest childhood memories are of licking the cream off the top of those bottles, and she’s not that old!

I, on the other hand, made do with the powdered milk my mom whipped up each night in an orange-colored plastic pitcher. It wasn’t until I was a grown up that I began buying the bottled stuff in stores, and then it became a bit of an addiction.
These days, I’m simply crazy about dairy products in pretty much all their forms (although I’m still not too gaga for cottage cheese, but that’s a texture thing). From yogurt and cheese to ice cream and butter, it’s all good. And still, while all those things are wonderful and delicious, I still love a tall glass of ice-cold whole milk most of all. To me, it is the perfect accompaniment to pretty much any meal.
What is your dairy addiction? Which milk-based product would you be totally lost without? And if you can’t drink milk (bless your little heart), what do you like to replace it with? Whatever milk you drink (or milk substitute), we hope you have a wonderful National Milk Day!
