When a woman’s dreams come crashing down around her through no fault of her own, the life she planned is no longer a possibility. But will she be able to find the strength she needs to move on and sieze the life she wants before it is too late? Find out in Tamera Alexander’s moving new historical novel, To Wager Her Heart.

Tamera Alexander's TO WAGER HER HEART

In 1871, a year after her fiance is killed in a horrible train accident, beautiful Alexandra Jamison is fighting for her life. Her father is trying to marry her off, but she has no intention of settling for an arranged marriage when she has tasted what real love is like. Besides, she treasures her independence and wants to teach at Fisk University, the first freedmen’s college in America.

Then Sylas Rutledge appears in her father’s study. Unlike anyone Alexandra has ever known, he is a reformed gambler from Colorado, a man more comfortable in a stetson and duster than a three piece suit. He’s invested everything he has into the Northeast Line Railroad, but first he has to impress General William Giles Harding if his venture is to be successful. To do so, he needs Alexandra’s help to learn how to navigate through Nashville’s polite society.

There’s just one problem. The train accident that killed Alexandra’s fiance is the very one that Sylas’s father is accused of causing. Nevertheless, they become unlikely allies in the hopes that they can both get what they want. And as they work toward their goals, the unlikely duo falls in love. But can Alexandra build a lasting relationship with a rogue?

Tamera Alexander carefully weaves together a breathtaking love story and fascinating historical detail to craft a novel that is as compelling as it is illuminating. Readers will quickly fall for the strong willed, engaging, and entertaining couple, rooting for them to get a ‘happy ever after.’ But they will also learn a great deal about Belle Meade Plantation, Fisk University’s Jubilee Singers ensemble, and other pieces of post-Civil War history that may be completely unfamiliar to most.

To Wager Her Heart is my first experience reading Alexander’s work, but it won’t be my last. She has a knack for pulling us in from page one so we are quickly vested in the story and its characters. Not only that, she makes us think about what is truly important in our own lives, reminds us why we must stand up for what is right, and shows us that sometimes we have to take a leap of faith to find real happiness.

  1. It has been a while since I’ve read an inspirational book and I think I’ve been missing out – there’s a lot to be said about a book with a positive message.

Thanks for being a part of the tour!
