What would you do if everything you thought you knew about yourself turned out to be a lie? In the new book, A Pivotal Right, a young woman named Viola is faced with just such a dilemma when she discovers her father isn’t who she thought he was and that her mother, Florence, has kept the truth hidden for years.

This premise captured our imaginations, so we invited the author to tell us how being a mother herself impacted the way she wrote Viola’s character and what advice she would give to Florence on how to handle telling a child such a carefully guarded secret. We hope you enjoy this guest post from K.A. Servian! —Jathan & Heather Continue reading “When A Bad Idea Seems Like Your Only Option [GUEST POST]”

When a historical fiction author pens a new book, we always have loads of questions for them. But in the case of A.B. Michaels and her latest novel, The Price of Compassion, we just had one burning question that we wanted to ask. In this case, we asked her to tell us about the most challenging part of researching the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and whether or not any heroic stories from that time period inspired her during the writing process. We hope you enjoy her answer in today’s guest post.  —Jathan & Heather Continue reading “A.B. Michaels Makes Surprising Discovery While Researching ‘The Price of Compassion’ [GUEST POST]”

Get Lost in A.B. Michaels’ ‘The Price of Compassion’ [EXCERPT]

A.B. Michaels THE PRICE OF COMPASSION Blog TourWe love a meaty historical saga that can transport us back in time so we can walk the very streets the characters do. That’s why we love A.B. Michaels’ “The Golden City” series! Thoroughly researched and deftly drawn, these books take us back to the early days of “the city by the bay” that crooner Tony Bennett always sings about, San Francisco. In the fourth volume in the series, The Price of Compassion, Michaels constructs her story around the 1906 earthquake that devastated the city, an event which has always been intriguing to us since our family has a personal connection to the event. (One of my ancestors was reportedly a fireman who risked his life to help put out the fire!) Now you can explore this event yourself. To get you started, read this excerpt from the book. Enjoy! —Jathan & Heather Continue reading “Get Lost in A.B. Michaels’ ‘The Price of Compassion’ [EXCERPT]”

Birds. There is something truly special about these creatures that captures the imaginations of all of us. Whether we’re feeding ducks at a park or hummingbirds nectar outside our window, watching predatory hawks soar high in the sky or an ominous flock of grackles loom overhead on power lines like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock film, or laughing at the antics of waddling penguins and precariously poised flamingoes, these winged animals are everywhere and yet each is stunning in its own way. Over the years, National Geographic has shared our fascination with them, and now they are revealing all their hard-won wisdom and stellar photographs and artistry in one incomparable volume, The Splendor of Birds: Art and Photographs from National Geographic.  Continue reading “National Geographic’s ‘The Splendor of Birds’ Is Simply Breathtaking [REVIEW]”
