In the seventh installment of the addictive Ryder Creed K-9 mystery series (after Hidden Creed), Alex Kava delivers a mesmerizing, dark tale of mayhem that spans the state of Nebraska.
This time out, Ryder drives from the Florida panhandle to Nebraska along with his partner Grace, a Jack Russell terrier, to assist on an investigation with Tommy Pakula, a special investigator of the Nebraska Human Trafficking Task Force.
In another county of Nebraska, Anne Brown, a rural postal worker, stumbles across a dismembered body in a black plastic bag. But this is just the first on a trail of bodies strategically left behind by a killer searching for the one that got away. Soon, Ryder and Grace travel to the site where the body was found to offer their assistance.
When inclement weather rolls in, Ryder finds the hideaway of a missing young woman named Libby Holmes. But he can’t escape the targeted knife skills of Ariel, a dangerous woman who has no qualms about stabbing him. With a knife wound, as well as two unstable women who may or may not be associated with the killer at large, Ryder uses every feasible means possible to save himself.
Miles away, Maggie O’Dell, Tommy, and a number of Ryder’s other friends race against the clock to locate him before the killer does. All the while, Maggie’s feelings for Ryder permeate her thoughts and actions until she sees him in the flesh.
Kava writes about their tenuous relationship in such a heartfelt, endearing way, readers will be eager to see how the two of them move forward despite being miles apart. In a novel that is as spellbinding as it is clever, Kava once again shares her vision with us with unparalleled skill, proving once again why she is one of my all-time favorite writers.
From the first chapter to the last, Fallen Creed is a pulse-pounding page turner fraught with intense emotion and characters we can’t help but care about. Readers will not be able to put down this harrowing thriller. This is Kava at her very best!
