Karen Robards’ latest novel, Darkness, captivated me from the very first sentence. “It was an ordinary flight, on an ordinary day, full of ordinary people. Until it wasn’t.” Then the unthinkable happens and the plan crashes into the mountains. No one knows why. As someone who is already a nervous flier, this story line had my palms sweating right from the start.

A year later, a small jet carrying a total of four people drops from the sky and lands near Alaska’s Attu Island, where researchers are conducting studies on native bird habitats in the area.
One of the ornithologists, Dr. Gina Sullivan, watches the plane descend near her boat. She rescues the sole survivor, James “Cal” Callahan, from the wreckage as well as from an impending storm.
Racing against the clock, with little food, no radios to communicate with the outside world, and a bullet wound in Cal’s side, they battle internal demons and deadly mercenaries as they struggle to reach safety.
With Darkness, Robards has crafted a masterful plot that is taut with suspense. It’s an emotionally charged thrill ride that should come with a warning for pregnant women and anyone with heart problems, because the danger is palpable and the tension will definitely raise your blood pressure. Let me warn you, you’re going to want to devour Darkness in one sitting. It’s simply that riveting and that good!
