When Deputy Owen Slater comes home one night to find his front door open and his infant daughter and her nanny missing, his heart stops. After all, he’s already lost two of the people he loved most in the world, and he doesn’t think he can handle a third.

Soon he discovers that his ranch manager, Laney Martin, is keeping his baby safe from gunmen roaming his property. But who are they looking for? Could they be the same people who murdered his father? Or are they after Laney herself? And if so, why?

The trail of clues leads right to Owen’s own family, and now he must work with Laney and his brothers to uncover long buried secrets and get at the truth before the mastermind behind the attacks draws last blood.

I’ve been reading Delores Fossen’s books for a long time, and A Threat to His Family is now one of my favorites. First of all, she does a fabulous job making me care about Owen, Laney, and baby Addie from the very first page. In fact, he and his brothers are perfect protagonists for the Longview Ridge Ranch series because they are strong, vibrant characters who put family first, have great rapport and whose banter is spot on and very funny. Laney is no slouch either, she is smart and resourceful, and the mutual attraction they try to resist works well to keep the momentum of the story both taut and rolling along at a fevered pace.

Since this book is published under Harlequin’s Intrigue imprint, however, it is also loaded with suspense. There are countless red herrings, plenty of potential villains (including folks on both sides of the law), and even some pretty juicy secrets someone will do their best to keep buried. Add in mysterious gunmen and some very intense shootouts, and you’ve got the recipe for a novel that grabs our attention and keeps it until the very last moment.

If you love your fiction heavy on the mystery and lighter on the passion, this is your kind of book. It may be category romance, but it is one heck of a good story and leaves us eager to read the third installment in the series. So buckle up and grab a fan, because this story is as hot and bumpy as the back roads of Texas on a summer night. Enjoy!
