Just as the tenuous life Allison has built for herself comes crashing down around her, she receives a package that sweeps her back into the past to a childhood she never speaks about.

When she was only seven years old, she became an orphan after her mother was killed in a drunk driving accident. With no father to speak of, she is soon put into the foster care system, but doesn’t fare well there among the older mean girls who torment her for no good reason.

That’s when a legendary brain surgeon and philanthropist, Dr. Vincent Capello, arrives to take her back to the Dragon, the breathtaking oceanside home he lives in with his other adopted children. There she finds solace and happiness, until the night she is taken away from the adoptive family who made her feel safe for once in her young life.

Thirteen years later, she receives a letter from Dr. Capello’s eldest son, Roland, asking her to return before his father succumbs to the illness he’s suffering from. Compelled to return, she is filled with questions, but one in particular haunts her—which member of the family tried to kill her all those years ago on the very night she was taken away? And if she does go back, will they try to finish the job?

The Lucky Ones is an atmospheric, modern-day gothic novel that is reminiscent of the best of Daphne du Maurier, Phyllis A. Whitney, Victoria Holt and Velda Johnston. From page one, readers will be drawn into the small world that Allison inhabits, one that is multifaceted and finely drawn, yet simultaneously beautiful, haunting, and foreboding.

Reisz has crafted characters that are fascinating, authentic, sympathetic and somehow dangerous, all at the same time. This is the kind of novel that made me fall in love with reading in the first place and which has made me a lifelong fan of the genre. I think readers are going to feel the same way as they give themselves over to the work of a master wordsmith, one who manipulates our emotions with glee, and yet worms her way into our hearts with every word she’s written. If you love gothic stories or simply crave a good yarn, don’t miss Tiffany Reisz’s The Lucky Ones.
