How to Make Your Compliments Count

Free compliments for everyone! (Photo by Memphis CVB, Flickr)

I was doing my school work and it started saying something about communication, and I thought, ‘What a perfect time to procrastinate.’ So I started researching what makes a genuinely good compliment, and the interwebs suggested that I reflect on what kind of compliments I enjoy receiving, or which ones stand out more than others, because odds are, other people probably like similar compliments.

Anyway, the results are in: I love compliments that are about my internal qualities rather than my external appearance. I don’t care what you think about my hair, but I do care if you think of me as a good person, and I care about how you think I treat you or others around me. The quality of your outfit is trivial, but the quality of your heart is paramount. So I think that the best compliments are the ones that don’t age, maybe?

Also the Internet told me that giving a good compliment isn’t about being outgoing, it’s about being positive. I totally agree with that. And because I’m that good, I found some really sweet compliments to get us started on the journey to making other people feel better about themselves:

  1. Thanks for taking care of that, you really helped me out. It feels great to know I can depend on you.
  2. You’re like sunshine on a rainy day. (I like that one!)
  3. You’re gorgeous/handsome, but that’s the least interesting thing about you.
  4. I bet you do your crossword puzzles in pen.

Wow, that’s a lot of words. Kudos to you if you made it to the end!
