Life is full of tough choices. As a passenger on a plane, however, you have little control once you buckle up. You have to trust the pilot knows what he is doing. Hopefully he is having a good day. But what if your pilot was given a dilemma: such as you and your fellow passengers die, or his family does. Welcome aboard debut author T.J. Newman’s Falling.
After taking a turbulent flight from Cincinnati to Phoenix years ago, I have always been a suspicious, and anxious flyer. Did the pilot have an argument with his/her significant other? Did he get enough sleep? What alcoholic beverages were consumed hours before takeoff? I have an entire checklist.
As my husband has reminded me more than once, there are more accidents in cars than in airplanes statistically speaking. Rationally I understand that but psychologically and emotionally the impact is different.
And yet I chose to read Fallen of my own accord. Was my heart pounding as I read the various scenes in the cabin? Yes. My palms were sweating when the threat was revealed to the flight attendants. How would they not show fear or anxiety as they formulated a plan to assist in landing the plane safely?
Newman masterfully takes the reader through every heart-pounding, hair-raising, nail-biting scenario with authenticity and relentless action. Buy it, download it, or borrow the book from the library. Whatever way you get your hands on it, don’t miss out on reading Fallen! It is one memorable flight indeed!

T. J. Newman, a former bookseller turned flight attendant, worked for Virgin America and Alaska Airlines from 2011 to 2021. She wrote much of Falling on cross-country red-eye flights while her passengers were asleep. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Falling is her first novel.
