Halona and her son have just escaped a life rife with violence, one where her former husband brought it across their threshold and into their home. And yet, her emotions are conflicted and she is loathe to reveal the truth to anyone. Meanwhile, Alex understands her predicament. Only he is convinced she must broach the subject and clear the air before she jeopardizes her son’s future forever.

There’s a reason Annie Rains is gaining popularity. She has a knack for writing a heartwarming novel that addresses serious topics, including the domestic violence seen here. But she also understands the human condition, and the terror that comes when one tries to control their emotions even as their world spirals out of control. As we learn here, sometimes the hardest thing to do is confront the elephant in the room.
