First there was the heist. Next there was the murder. Finally there is the disappearing thief and the missing money. When a criminal’s daughter returns to town, everyone seems to have one question on their minds. How much does she know? Find out in Thick as Thieves, Sandra Brown’s most suspenseful novel yet.

One night four teenagers formulate a plan to rob a store of millions and stash the proceeds until they can divide it four ways. However, as the night unfolds, one ends up dead, one is arrested, one lands in the hospital and one gets away with the haul.

Many years later, Arden Maxwell needs a change of pace from her life in Houston, Texas. So she returns to her family home in Caddo Lake to lick her wounds. She hopes that returning to the last place she saw her father alive before he abruptly left her and her sister all those years ago may provide some much needed closure.

Unbeknownst to Arden, her arrival causes quite a stir among the surviving thieves. Does she know where the money is or what happened to her father? As everyone seeks answers to their burning questions, strange incidents begin happening around town and the body count begins to rise.

Enter Ledge Burnet, a man who just spent years in the military trying to make amends for his misspent youth. Together, he and Arden try to unravel what happened on the night way back in 2000 when the store was robbed. The deeper they dig, the more questions they seem to have. But one thing can’t be denied, their mutual attraction may soon catch fire.

As we have come to expect from a Sandra Brown thriller, each page of Thick as Thieves is steeped in intrigue, secrets, and deceit. But she also digs deep into her characters’ psyches, exploring their motivations, allowing us to truly see the depth of Ledge’s angst and contrition. In addition, she just writes about mysterious Caddo Lake so well, it makes me want to go exploring once the pandemic ends. I feel like I’ve been there!

All of these carefully crafted, thoughtful elements on the author’s part makes this a compulsively entertaining read that keeps us guessing from beginning to end. I literally had no idea who the real culprit was until the very end, and I usually figure out the ending about halfway through a book! If you enjoyed her novels Mean Streak and Witness, you’re going to devour Thick as Thieves. Don’t miss it!
