Novelist Writes Her Own Love Story in ‘Sugarplum Way’ [REVIEW]

In Debbie Mason’s new book, Sugarplum Way, effervescent, exuberant, and eternally optimistic Julia Landon loves watching people fall in love. She’s even played matchmaker once or twice, despite the fact that she has yet to experience a love story of her own. So she does what any good romance novelist would do: she writes her own love story with her secret crush as her hero.

Debbie Mason's SUGARPLUM WAY

Forever

Julia Landon spends her days working at Books and Beans, the little independent book store she owns downstairs from her tiny one bedroom apartment. Her secret passion, however, is writing love stories, even if she does write using a pseudonym. Her dad and brothers worry that she’ll never be able to support herself and are far too overprotective for her taste, but her first book was a runaway success, and now she’s under contract to deliver the second. There’s just one problem. The leading man in her new story is based on the tall, dark, and handsome single dad she kissed under the mistletoe the year before, Aidan Gallagher. But he’s emotionally unavailable, and seems to have to have it out for her, even if Julia is certain that he’s her soul mate. Cornered by a deadline, does she dare let her book see the light of day and therefore expose her secret crush to anyone who reads it? It’s a conundrum that’s got her all twisted up inside. If only love were easy….

Aidan, on the other hand, is a recently divorced cop who moved home to live with his dad in the small town he spent years trying to escape. He wants to be the best father on the planet, which is tricky business given that his ex doesn’t exactly hold him in high esteem. But he wants to make the holiday season special for his daughter so she will want to come see him during her scheduled visitation. The only trouble is, there’s a certain book shop owner who has gotten under his skin. He wants to dislike her. In fact, for the life of him, he can’t figure out why everyone in town seems to think she’s the greatest thing to ever happen to Harmony Harbor. She’s always so darn perky, and she’s always meddling in other people’s love lives, namely his dad’s. Even so, he reluctantly finds himself imagining them as a couple. But will he still feel that way when he learns about the secret Julia has been keeping?

Sugarplum Way is a delightful romantic comedy that is filled with lighthearted humor, charming characters, and a whimsical romance that readers will adore. In one comic predicament after another, Julia and Aidan find themselves at odds. Still, the chemistry between them is palpable, even if they are reluctant to acknowledge it. The imagined village of Harmony Harbor is also special, and is a place readers will undoubtedly want to return to time and again. This is escapist fiction at its best and is the kind of book that leaves us feeling good, which is especially important these days. Readers who enjoy reading RaeAnne Thayne and Debbie Macomber will undoubtedly love Debbie Mason. She infuses each page with wonder and mirth, which makes it the perfect story for a season of joy.
